Engaging in Advocacy: An Introduction to Statewide Advocacy & the DASH-NY Coalition

When: February 10, 1:00 PM – 2:30 PM

Audience: DASH-NY member organizations and interested professionals

Description: Created in 2010 to work across the state on obesity prevention strategies, DASH-NY is moving forward to focus on state-level advocacy. Since the coalition is a diverse group of organizations, many member organizations may be new to advocacy, concerned about lobbying, or unsure of how they can participate in this new direction.

This Advocacy 101 webinar will help you understand your role in our evolving coalition and ways your organization can contribute to DASH-NY’s mission. Our speakers are experts in advocacy and coalition building. You will learn advocacy basics, the difference between advocacy and lobbying, and how you can work in our coalition.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Increase your knowledge of state-level advocacy.
  2. Understand the difference between lobbying and non-lobbying activities.
  3. Clarify your role in the DASH-NY coalition.
  4. Identify how your organization can contribute to the DASH-NY mission.

Presenters:

Robin Vitale – Senior Director, Government Relations, American Heart Association
Michael O’Loughlin – Coalition and Advocacy Consultant
Barbara Devore – Director of Development, Independent Living Center of the Hudson Valley
Michelle Jackson – Associate Director & General Counsel, Human Services Council

Pressing Issues: DASH-NY 2016 Food Policy Priorities

When: February 12, 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM

Audience: DASH-NY member organizations, food, health, and policy professionals, and members of the public.

Description: DASH-NY presents our 2016 Food Policy Priorities! The priorities represent the most important food policy issues affecting New Yorkers right now, including funding for school meals and improving food deserts. Speakers from DASH-NY partner organizations will join to provide a robust perspective on the important food policy issues of 2016.

This one-hour webinar will outline the budget barriers that limit schools’ access to healthy, local products, and the lack of access to quality produce in low-income neighborhoods. Speakers will provide context and offer examples for how you can support these initiatives over the coming year!

Learning Objectives:

  1. Understand the background and current landscape of supermarket incentives in food deserts.
  2. Learn how to improve access to local foods to help farmers and students.
  3. Identify two ways you can support healthy food policies.

Presenters:

Robin Vitale – Senior Director, Government Relations, American Heart Association
